108 Flying Geese!

Whew – I did it! I sewed 108 flying geese this week for the Star Surround Quilt-A-Long. If you haven’t joined this QAL, there is still time! Just look for the button on the right-hand side of my blog and come join the fun!

Here’s a look at all 108 flying geese, sorted into 9 piles:

Star Surround Quilt-A-Long

Happy August everyone! I recently joined an online quilt-a-long designed and hosted by Melissa at Happy Quilting. There is a button link to the quilt-a-long on the right-hand side of my blog so come join us!

For this project, I had to catch up this week with both cutting my fabric and creating this week’s assignment: half square triangles!

Since I just made a quick circle of flying geese project using the Mama Said Sew line from Sweetwater, I decided to use this same line of fabric to create a scrappy version of the Star Surround quilt. For my solid, I’m using Essex Yarn Dyed in Black by Robert Kaufman. This fabric blends in really well with the Mama Said Sew fabric and adds a bit of dramatic interest to my project!

Here’s a look at my 9 groupings of half square triangles, with 1 group laid out in the star shape:

I tried to get a photo of one of my quilting cats while I was cutting the squares for my project this week. The photo is a bit blurry, but I think my cat approves of my fabric selection!

Our next assignment for this quilt-a-long will be Monday and will feature flying geese.

Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show, Photo Gallery (post 3)

Hi everyone,

There were so many wonderful quilts displayed in Sisters this year. I spent about 3 hours walking around and admiring them, but still couldn’t see them all!

The light and shadows played across many of the quilts so it was difficult getting good pictures. I’ve created a slideshow with a few of the quilts so you can see some of the wonderful eye candy and maybe plan your trip to a future Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show! If you made of these quilts, please let me know and I’ll add your name.

To see the quilts that I made and displayed in the show, visit here.

Sit back, grab some coffee, and enjoy!

Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show, All About Cows! (Post 2)

Happy Saturday everyone!

This is my second post about the fabulous Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show from last Saturday, July 13th.

I wanted to highlight a really cute exhibit called the “Whimsical Cow Stampede” featuring cow quilts from the book, Out of the Box with Easy Blocks by Mary Lou Weidman and Melanie Bautista McFarland. This book is on my must-buy list!

These quilts all used the cow pattern with a twist!

I think these cow quilts are so adorable especially since I have a Cow cat.

We decided to have a picnic lunch outside of Sisters to escape the heat and went up to Scott Lake. You can see part of the Three Sisters in the background. This is quiet little lake with a small campground that we’ll probably camp at in the future. Just remember to bring mosquito repellent!

I have more to pictures to upload from the quilt show so watch for my next post coming soon!

Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show, Post 1

Hi everyone,

I had an amazing time last Saturday looking at all the wonderful quilts displayed in the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show. I took plenty of quilt show photos and will post them over the next few days.

I’ll start by posting this great view of the Three Sisters:

Three Sisters in July

Three Sisters in July

I love living here in Oregon, amongst these beautiful Cascade mountains and tall evergreens!

In this post, I’ll show you the three quilts that I displayed this year. The Hummer Storm quilt we found right away, but the other two quilts were a bit more difficult to find. We finally did find them at opposite ends of town.

I love this picture that my hubby took of my Hummer Storm quilt because you can see our son also taking a picture of me and the quilt with our little point-and-shoot camera:

And Happy Halloween:

We started the day bright and early during the quilt hanging process. We finished touring the quilt show around 11:30 when our little guy decided he’d had enough of the quilts and wanted to go for a hike.

I hope you enjoyed this first post on the quilt show. Stay tuned for more quilt photos in my next post!

Hummer Storm at Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show!

In an earlier post, I showed you the BOM quilt that I’m entering into the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show. I’m also entering this Happy Halloween applique quilt.

I finished my third and final quilt to display at the show called Hummer Storm! This quilt is entirely paper pieced using just 3 fabrics. The design is by Cherry Blossoms Quilting Studio.

I just love how this quilt turned out! The movement of the Storm at Sea blocks combined with Snail Trail blocks showcases well and the turquoise zinger really adds that extra pop.

Here’s a look at the quilt front:

For the quilt back, I used leftover pieces of fabric to add some interest to the label area:

The finished quilt is about 66 inches by 66 inches.

I can’t wait to see it displayed at the quilt show in just a few weekends!
Enjoy,

Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show – Block Contest

Westminster Fibers is sponsoring a quilt block contest at the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show this year! I decided to join in on all the fun by creating my own blocks. I selected the blue colorway from the official block contest fabric line – Parson Gray-Seven Wonders.

The rules are pretty straight forward:
– You must use only the fabrics in the packet ($10 from the Stitchin’ Post in Sisters).
– Blocks must be 9.5 x 9.5 inches (includes seam allowance)
– Any method is allowed – piecing, applique, handwork, just no machine embroidered designs.
– Embellishments are welcome!

I’ve been on a bit of a bird kick this year so I continued with that theme by creating my first block with a birdhouse and a little birdie! Then, I had fun adding a bunch of embellishments.

I used blue metallic thread to applique the upper portion of the birdhouse and green metallic thread along the ground to imitate grass or little plants. I used hot-fix crystals to add plenty of sparkle when the block is displayed in the beautiful central Oregon sunshine! I hope the sparkles will catch your eye if you visit the quilt show.

For additional accents, I hand embroidered a sunshine, the bird’s details, and tall green grasses. On a whim, I stitched on a cute little lizard, making his way towards the birdhouse.

Here’s a closeup of the bird and the lizard details:

Here’s a look at the whole block:

For the second block, I decided to make a geometric paper-pieced block without any added embellishments. This was a challenge because we only had a 10-inch piece of blue fabric plus 4 individual 6-inch pieces of fabric to work with to create the block! I used Unit 18 from Carol Doak’s book, Simply Sensational 9-Patch Stars.

Here’s a look at the second block:

Contest Block #2

I had so much fun making these blocks. If you missed my earlier post here, I also sent in some fabric postcards that will displayed and auctioned off at Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show this July.

The quilt show instructors will each select their favorite block and the number one block will win “best in show.” I would be so thrilled if one of my little blocks got selected to be a favorite!

Until next time, enjoy these blocks!

Quilted Mystery BOM for the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show

A few weeks ago, I posted that I had completed piecing together the top of Carol Doak’s year-long mystery block-of-the-month that she created for her Yahoo groupies.

I plan on displaying this quilt as one of three quilts this July at the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show. I’m calling my completed quilt “Yahoo Stars” in honor of Carol’s Yahoo group and because I used 2 star themed fabrics in the quilt. I will write about the other two quilts in a future blog post.

I finished up the quilting and binding this week and took a few photos of the completed project:

The quilt back is just a coordinating navy blue/star print with a label attached to the bottom.

I plan on going to the Sisters Quilt Show to photograph my quilt in person. If you see me there, say hi!

Happy quilting!

Central Oregon Quilt Shop Hop Weekend

This weekend, I went shop hopping in central Oregon with my mom. It’s a gorgeous drive from the Willamette Valley over to central Oregon taking approximately 3 hours depending on photo stops! We had beautiful weather with clear blue skies and temperatures in the upper 70s.

I love seeing the Cascade mountain range still in wintery snow coats against the blue sky. By summertime, much of the snow has melted so the vistas, while stunning, do not have the same pizzazz as they do in the winter and spring.

Just outside of Sisters, Oregon, you’ll find this stunning scene of the Three Sister and Brokentop:

Home of the famous Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show and the Stitchin’ Post, this quaint town was our first of eight quilt store stops. We picked up our passports, a pattern, and a fat 1/8th. Each store in the shop hop contributed 1 piece of pattern that will create a mystery quilt. In addition, each store provided a free fat 1/8th which you could use to make a special shop hop quilt designed by Jean Wells of the Stitchin’ Post.

This is the shop hop quilt using fat 1/8ths plus additional batiks: (sorry for the blurriness!)

In total, we visited these 8 shops totaling about 450 miles from home:
The Stitchin’ Post in Sisters, Quiltworks in Bend, BJ’s Quilt Basket in Bend, Sew Many Quilts in Bend, Homestead Quilts in La Pine, Material Girls in Redmond, Quilter’s Attic in Terrebonne, and The Quilt Shack in Prineville.

Here’s a little slideshow featuring some of the stores, quilts, and scenery from the shop hop:

It was a fun quilt shop hop, and I hope you enjoyed this little taste of central Oregon.

Black and White Swap Blocks Received

I participated in a group swap where each participant made black & white or black/white & zinger 12-inch quilt blocks and then sent them to the swap hostess. All the blocks were designed by Carol Doak.

Yesterday, I received my blocks in the mail! I am so happy with each block that I received and feel that each one is special since another quilter made them with caring and great attention to detail.

Here are the blocks:

The top block is from Mary D in Oregon, the middle block is from Dorothy H F in Massachusetts, and the bottom block is from Erica W. Thanks also to our wonderful block hostess – Cathy from Texas!

Here are the blocks lined up together:

I am going to use these 3 blocks and add in some of my own black/white and black/white/zinger blocks to make a fun wallhanging! I had such a great experience with this swap, and I hope you enjoy looking at the photos.

Happy quilting!
