Sea Glass BOM, Months 11 and 12

Happy Friday, everyone!

This week seemed very long for some reason. Cabin fever, I suppose. We had a little snow flurry earlier in the week, giving us a skiff of snow where it was pretty to watch the fluffy flakes falling from the sky, but not enough to cause any problems. It melted within hours, and the dog loved it!

For the Sea Glass BOM by Fig Tree, I finished my month 11 blocks in early December and my month 12 blocks in early January.

For month 11, we made 4 total blocks using 2 similar but slightly different settings. The blocks on the left in the picture are called Sea Urchin and the blocks on the right are called Barnacle Star.

I love how the blues just sparkle and pop in these blocks!

I also finished all my flying geese for the sawtooth border. As of month 11, the exact layout is still a mystery.

For month 12, we made 2 blocks called Sea Sparkle. These blocks are nearly identical with the exception of the placement of the blue half-square triangles.

It’s hard to believe that we have completed all the blocks in this wonderful BOM! We received the final layout instructions with block 12 so I’ve been working on piecing my quilt top together the past several weeks. The finished quilt top has 3 different borders, one using the flying geese mentioned above.

In my next post, I’ll show you my quilt assembly process and the completed quilt flimsy. I’ve been waiting for some non-rainy weather to get a decent pic of the quilt outside with my photography assistants, and I think this afternoon just might work.

Sea Glass BOM, Month 7

Happy Friday, everyone!

We made it through another week, although they are starting to blur together. The warm August days are beautiful, and I do enjoy getting a little outside each day during breaks and lunch as I work from home. My little backyard vegetable garden is thriving, and we’ve enjoyed several salads from the bounty. School is starting soon for my teen, but it will so very different being online rather than in person.

I finished my month 7 blocks for the Sea Glass BOM, designed by Fig Tree. I’m really enjoying the soothing color palette of these blocks each month.

This block is called Sea Star.

My blocks in the BOM are growing! I just need to go back to last month and complete the flying geese (likely for border units).

Sea Glass BOM, Month 6

Hi everyone,

Whew, it has been a warm week with temperatures in the 90s. My vegetable garden is finally starting to perk up after a cool start to our summer. We’re harvesting salad lettuces now, and the squashes are growing rapidly. I can’t wait for the tomatoes!

I recently finished my 2 blocks for month 6 of the Sea Glass block of the month by Fig Tree. The block this month is called Compass Rose.

Look at these beautiful fabrics! I think the darker aqua is so pretty.

I still need to sew the flying geese border units for this month so I hope to get them finished this weekend.

Little Box of Figs, Catalina Stars Quilt Project

Happy Monday, everyone!

Last fall, I subscribed for the first time to a quarterly fabric subscription box called “Little Box of Figs” created by Fig Tree & Co. The subscriptions open up each fall, and they are limited so if you don’t sign up quickly, then it fills up. I first noticed this subscription on Instagram when some quilters had posted pictures of a cute fall pumpkin mini quilt, and I thought I’d try it out!

I received my first quarterly box a few weeks ago, appropriately themed for one season ahead so participants have time to finish the project.

Here’s what my box looked like:

We received a very cute tote bag, a mini cutting mat, notepad, folding scissors, supplies to make a key fob, plus the fabric and pattern for a quilt called Catalina Stars. The fabric and charm packs were packaged in the adorable green box.

The quilt is a nice lap size, approximately 44.5 inches by 52.5 inches. I decided to get started on it right away so that I could use it for a picnic quilt this summer. The pattern goes together very quickly, with the 10 star blocks taking the most time. I pieced the entire quilt using Aurifil 50 weight thread.

The fabric line, Catalina, is light, cheery, and summery! The remaining blocks are comprised of 2 squares and 1 rectangle so you can chain piece them together.

I took my quilt flimsy with us out on a recent family hike, along a section of the Pacific Crest Trail. We did run into snow about an hour into our hike, but we were able to pick out the trail here and there until we made it to a stunning view of Three Fingered Jack. We had a picnic lunch here, and my hubby took a picture of me holding the quilt top. It was quite windy!!

I love both hiking and quilting so I try to take pics of quilts “in the wild” whenever I can! In total, we hiked about 5-6 miles that day, but the snow made it a little slow going. However, the scenery and fresh air was just incredible, and we had the trail mostly to ourselves.

Sea Glass BOM by Fig Tree, Block 4

Hi everyone,

I had a chance in the past few days to catch up on my Sea Glass BOM by Fig Tree & Co. This is a year long block-of-the-month that started in January.

I worked on the flying geese border units that we were supposed to make with the month 3 blocks, but I didn’t have time in March. We made 27 flying geese units, and we could mix and match the colors in whatever order we wanted.

The block for April is called “Ocean Coral,” and I really love the darker blue aqua print! I believe that print is from the Breeze line of fabrics by Zen Chic. I may have to get some more of this fabric for my stash!

I always like to take pictures of my blocks outside whenever possible because the lighting brings out the richness of the fabrics. I had the opportunity this morning where the weather was calm.

The softness of this color palette is really appealing to me right now during our COVID-19 crisis. As I sew together more blocks, I can see the sea glass emerging! I need to find some real pieces of sea glass the next time I can go to the beach.

Sea Glass BOM by Fig Tree, Blocks 1-3

Last year, I signed up for a new 12-month 2020 block-of-the-month (BOM) program with Fig Tree & Co called Sea Glass. This program contains the fabric and instructions to create two blocks each month using soft sea glass colors for a breezy, beachy feel.

The first block packets shipped in January with a block called Sand Dollar. My neighbor’s cat stopped by for a brief inspection. He gives the blocks his approval!

In February, we received our second packet with fabrics to create the Starfish blocks. I love all of the aquas and light turquoises, playing together.

Our block for March is called Sea Anemone, and I just finished sewing mine together last weekend. There are some sawtooth border pieces to stitch together for March so I am a little bit behind, but I should catch up this week.

I expect to received the fabric and instructions for April any day now. I have seen some sneak peeks of the fabric on Instagram under the #seaglassbom hashtag, and the fabrics look really pretty! I hope to get April’s blocks stitched together this coming weekend.
