Scrappy Summer Sew Along + Update on Pepper

Hi everyone,

I posted about joining a scrappy summer sew along a few weeks ago here. This quilt uses your scrap bin to make a 9-patch blocks for a scrappy finish!

I used a bunch of yellows plus pinks/reds to make a “Raspberry Lemonade” scrappy quilt. I started sewing my 9-patch blocks as leaders/enders while working on other projects. Then, a bunch of crazy life stuff happened, and I had to stop sewing for a couple of weeks.

Here’s a look at some of my 9-patch blocks, with sunlight filtering in through a side window:

Sunday was the last day to post our finished top on Instagram as part of the sew along. I pulled out the 9-patch blocks that I had completed, and I had just enough for a baby sized quilt. My quilt inspector helped me to sort the blocks into rows and columns.

I enjoyed sewing these little blocks together as a sort of meditative time for myself. We had beautiful weather here yesterday so I was able to get a picture of the quilt flimsy, fluttering in the breeze, on a nearby little bridge.

I’m going to back this little quilt with some soft, cuddly Minky fabric and likely donate it.

One of the life events that happened recently is a major (and expensive) surgery for our girl, Pepper. She had the surgery one week ago today, and she is doing pretty well with her recovery. We’re hoping that she’ll be back to hiking with us later this winter or next spring. She needs a full 8-10 weeks for recovery plus multiple physical therapy sessions.

If you’d like to help, I started a GoFundMe to offset some of the cost of the surgery and physical therapy.

Each day, she is getting stronger! We just have to keep this very active dog from running or jumping for 8 weeks. Whew!

A Quick and Easy Baby Quilt

Hi everyone,

A family member just had a baby this past week, and I wanted to send her a little gift to welcome the precious little one.

I decided to put together a simple and quick baby quilt using fat quarters and scraps from my stash. I had some super cute safari themed fabric with giraffes, zebras, and alligators that I thought would be perfect for a baby boy.

I cut out 48 squares at 5.5 inches unfinished, and then set them out in 8 rows of 6 blocks each.

It’s was a pretty quick process to sew these blocks together, and then sew the rows together. Once I had assembled the top, I decided to add borders. However, I only had fat quarters and odd scraps, so I had to piece the borders together. I used 3″ borders all around the quilt, with giraffes down the sides and zebras on the top and bottom.

For the backing, I used a piece of minky called “Safari Jeep” by Michael Miller Fabrics. I did purchase this piece from a local quilt shop because I wanted the softness of minky, but I didn’t have any in my stash.

I did a simple stippling for quilting using Glide thread in Lemon Ice. I loved the look of the yellow thread against the quit. The minky back quilted up beautifully on my HQ Avante. The binding is a navy blue and white striped fabric.

I forgot to measure the finished quilt before I mailed it off to the new mom and baby yesterday. I think it is close to a crib size.

Finished Dogs in Sweaters Quilt

Happy May!

In my last post, I blogged about finishing a dachshund pillow using the new Dogs in Sweaters pattern by Elizabeth Hartman.

I’ve also finished the small version of the quilt, featuring 4 dogs in flannel sweaters. The flannel is from Robert Kaufman’s Mammoth Flannel line and works well with these cute doggies. If you’re in the Missoula, Montana area in the next few months, this quilt is now on display at The Confident Stitch where they have the pattern and kits available.

Here’s a look at the small quilt with the pillow. I did choose a different colorway for the pillow to show the block using bright, modern prints.

On the quilt, I did wonky rectangle-shaped quilting using cream Aurifil thread in 50 weight. It blends into the quilt background so well, and I like how the focus remains on the dachshunds. I think this small sized quilt would make an adorable baby quilt!
