Make a Wish Postcards for SOQS + A Fabulous Coupon for Cricut Maker Machine

Today, I’m excited to share with you the 2 postcards that I made for the Make a Wish Postcard challenge for the 2020 Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show, now a re-imagined as a virtual show. I’m also very happy to share a special price and some coupon codes for the Cricut Maker machine, which you can use with fabric!

Challenge fabric for Wish Upon a Card 2020

For my first card, I used the Flame fabric by incorporating it into bird legs and the Meringue fabric by turning it into a bird’s eye. The remaining solid fabrics are by Cherrywood. I added hand embroidery elements, and added rose gold wire detail to the bird’s head. I called this postcard, “Tall Bird.”

For my second card, I decided to make an alpaca based on a photo that I took at last year’s quilt show while staying at the Sisters Best Western. The hotel replaced their llama herd with some young alpacas. One alpaca, in particular, gave me a charming side grin that I wanted to capture.

I started the process by printing 2 versions of my photo: a close-up and a full body. I traced the close-up of the alpaca face onto paper to make my pattern. I used a light table and created reverse applique pattern pieces.

The background of the card is from 3 different green batik prints, pieced together. The alpaca body is made from wool felt with machine and hand embroidered details. I used the Meringue challenge fabric as flowers in the background, along with some orange embroidered flowers.

I called this card, “Happy Alpaca!”

Although neither of my cards won a prize in the challenge, they will both be available for sale during the 2020 Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show virtual event. I’m not sure if they were selected for framing or matting, so I’ll find out along with you! I may even bid on my open cards, lol.

I really enjoy supporting the show by making these cards, and I purchase cards each year.

Finished Dogs in Sweaters Quilt

Happy May!

In my last post, I blogged about finishing a dachshund pillow using the new Dogs in Sweaters pattern by Elizabeth Hartman.

I’ve also finished the small version of the quilt, featuring 4 dogs in flannel sweaters. The flannel is from Robert Kaufman’s Mammoth Flannel line and works well with these cute doggies. If you’re in the Missoula, Montana area in the next few months, this quilt is now on display at The Confident Stitch where they have the pattern and kits available.

Here’s a look at the small quilt with the pillow. I did choose a different colorway for the pillow to show the block using bright, modern prints.

On the quilt, I did wonky rectangle-shaped quilting using cream Aurifil thread in 50 weight. It blends into the quilt background so well, and I like how the focus remains on the dachshunds. I think this small sized quilt would make an adorable baby quilt!

A Dachshund Pillow!

Hello quilty friends!

I’ve been working on making a small version of the new Dogs in Sweaters pattern by Elizabeth Hartman. After I finished making the 4 dog blocks (post to come soon!) using plaid fabric for the dog sweaters, I decided to make another dog using bright colors in the pillow size.

I pulled these fabrics to use:

  • Friedlander Fabric, Elevation in White for the background. It has a subtle pattern of cross-hatching lines.
  • Kona Coal for the ears and tail.
  • Essex Yarn Dyed Metallic in Fog for extra sparkle in the dog’s body, face, and feet.
  • Spectrum by V and Co for Moda #10862 for the pink sweater and pillow binding.
  • Remix #15240-50 by Ann Kelle for Robert Kaufman for the lime green sweater trim.
  • The pillow background is a green print from my stash. I don’t have the selvege anymore so I’m not sure what line it is from.

This pattern uses traditional piecing methods and comes together pretty quickly. I pieced the dog with Aurifil 2600, a light gray/silver color, in 50 wt. I also used the same thread to quilt diagonal cross-hatching lines across the pillow front.

I used Aurifil 5017, a lime green color, 50 wt to stitch around the eye glasses and to do the same diagonal quilting on the pillow back.

I couldn’t find the right size pillow form at any local quilt stores, but I finally found one at Ikea! Naturally, I picked up an extra form so I can made a second pillow eventually! 🙂

For a final accent, I added 2 pink hot-fix crystals to the glasses.

I really love how this pillow turned out! It’s a cute, easy project that you can do in a day.

I’ve finished piecing the small quilt using the same pattern, and hope to get it quilted in the next week!

Sew Many Colors Mini Quilt Finish

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

This past weekend, I had the great fortune to go on a mini 3-day vacation with my sister. We rented a condo at the Oregon coast and had a great time sewing all day on different projects.

I brought one project in particular to finish during our retreat called “Sew Many Colors” to celebrate Aurifil USA’s 10th anniversary and designed by Whole Circle Studio! I love Aurifil thread and use it for all my piecing so naturally I just had to make this quilt.

I decided to feature ocean/sea glass colors in this mini so I could have a virtual tropical vacation whenever I look at the quilt. I used Kona White as both my background and the backing for the quilt. I wanted the thread spool colors to really stand out.

For the thread spools, I used these Kona Cotton colors: Jamaica, Niagara, Astral, Malibu, Mediterranean, Ultra Marine, Grasshopper, Cabbage, Parrot, and Cyan. I used a Kona Cotton charm pack for all these colors except 1 that I pulled from my stash.

The binding is a scrappy mix using the leftovers from paper-piecing the spools. I had just enough to complete the binding – whew! I really love the dimensional effect that scrappy binding gives to this mini quilt.

Since I was at the beach, I decided to be adventurous with my free-motion quilting by stitching a sand dollar shape using Aurifil #4654. This is a lovely green and blue variegated thread in 50 weight. For the background quilting, I did all over free-motion swirls using Aurifil 2024 in 50 weight, and it blended perfectly with the Kona White.
